Prospect: Bjoern Werner

School:Florida State

Best Position: 43 DE

Height: 6-3

Weight:266

Year: Junior

40 Time: 4.83 (Combine)

Scouting Report Overview: Werner is a spectacular pass rusher with the strength to set the edge in the run game, making him an all around force.  Werner’s first step is excellent and gives opponents fits because he turns speed to power better than anyone in this draft. Werner could stand to add some bulk to his frame to become an even stronger force against the run. His best position is as a 4-3 Defensive End, with the ability to play either right or left (He played most of his college career at Left Defensive End).

Pass Rush: Werner amassed 23.5 sacks in his three-year career at FSU with 13 of those coming this past season. As stated he has an elite first step that allows his to set up a bevy of pass rush moves or blow by the tackle. Werner’s ability to turn speed to power is elite calibre as he’s capable of overpowering and out leveraging bigger, stronger linemen. Werner’s short area quickness was virtually unblockable in college and will prove the same at the next level. Werner is a long athlete with long arms. The exciting aspect for the German born Werner is he still has plenty of room for improvement, despite his already stunning success in his college career so far.

Run Defense: Werner stacks and sheds with power and does a nice job of playing his role in the Defensive assignment to not create excessive running lanes. This ability will allow to play at Left End in the NFL, where he will face more physical Right Tackles. The only criticism of Werner in the run game is that he will get high and driven out the play by blockers.

Size/Strength/Athleticism: Werner has the size you look for out of a modern day Right Defensive End. He has a nice 6-4 frame and long arms making him a difficult athlete to deal with. If he wants to play Left End (his college position) he could do with adding 10 pounds of strength to deal with bigger Right Tackles. He has the ability to stand up and play outside linebacker in a 3-4, but his best position is a 4-3 DE for sure.

NextEra RAP Best Postion Grade: 100.0 (43 DE), (#1 Rated 43 DE) (#10 Overall)

Other Positions: 83.1 (3-4 OLB)

As a 43 DE, Werner has the potential to be a Pro Bowl type player. His burst and athleticism translate very well to the next level.
