The team at NextEra in association with Verizon Wireless have organised the draft order based on the official 2013 NFL Draft order.

We have many changes in the 17th edition of the NextEra Mock Draft. The first is the same, but plenty of changes to follow afterwards.

This edition is also the first that includes ratings from our new player evaluation system! Here’s the first pick…

1.  Kansas City Chiefs : Manti Te’o, LB, Notre Dame

NextEra RAP Rating - 114.90 (4-3 MLB), 110.23 (3-4 MLB)

As you may have noticed we have had a new addition to our mock drafts. This week we feature for the first time our new player evaluation system. For more information on what the numbers mean, click through to our system explanation page.

It seems only fitting then that this week, our #1 ranked player gets selected 1st overall (Big Board coming soon).

The Chiefs obviously need a QB, but do they spend the 1st overall pick on one? Geno Smith is the only one really in the discussion at this point, but selecting him would be a significant risk. Smith is a poor man’s RG3 that has more  bust potential than RG3 ever did.

If I was in KC’s shoes I would look to take a QB at the top of the 2nd round, where there could be some very nice value options including Matt Barkley, Mike Glennon and Tyler Wilson. So with a QB pencilled in at the top of round 2, what do they do with the 1st overall pick?

Obviously a trade down would be preferable, but that looks unlikely to happen.

So they turn their attentions to four guys in my estimation. Jarvis Jones, Star Lotelulei, Luke Joeckel and Manti Te’o. After the deliberation, Manti Te’o would seem to be the best pick for this organisation right now.

The Kansas City Defense has some talent out there, look at Tamba Hali, Justin Houston, Eric Berry, Derrick Johnson and Brandon Flowers. What this Defense needs more than anything is a leader. With Te’o in the heart of the Kansas City Defense, this unit could become one of the better ones in the league overnight.

As the ratings show Te’o would be better suited as a Middle Linebacker in a 4-3 scheme, but he is still set to be one hell of a player whichever LB spot he plays in at the NFL level.
